Adding a Reset Button

After checking out the schematic, I gathered that when you power on your 64, Cap 34 causes pin five of U23 (hex Schmitt trigger inverter) to remain low for a moment which causes pin six to send a pulse to pins 34 (reset) of both CIA chips, pin C (reset) of the Cartridge Expansion Slot, and pin 6 (ext reset) of the serial bus. Essentially, this initiates the 64. Therefore, grounding pin five of U23 via a momentary switch will reset the 64 without interrupting power.

Pin 5 of U23 can be tapped at 3 junction locations on the component side of the main board.

I chose the positive lead of C43. The main board is full of ground points for the switch. Any one will do.

I chose a regular push button momentary switch and mounted to part of a small plastic box.

I’m not sure where I got the box, but it happened to have the same dimensions as the now vacant power port.

I mounted the switch with a self-adhesive wiring clip which wrapped tightly around the actual switch. Then, I stuck the adhesive part of the clip to the main board and reinforced it with hot glue.

The reset switch has a very sturdy feel. And, it is recessed which helps keep it from being inadvertently pressed. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to install a small resistor in series with my switch, but I didn't because I'm just that hardcore (actually I just forgot to do it).
